Practice:

Previously engaged in the Magistrates’ Courts Service for over 25 years. Held office of Clerk to the Teesside Justices and Justices’ Chief Executive (Designate) for Cleveland and was elected to the National Council of the Justices’ Clerks Society holding the position of Chairman of its Human Rights Committee. Served on the Lord Chancellor’s Human Rights Implementation Project Board.

Extensive knowledge of Criminal and Child Care Law. Regularly instructed by the Crown in sensitive, complex or high profile cases in the Magistrates’ and Youth Court and has prosecuted police and prison officers, teachers and in one case a Judge.

Instructed in complex expert evidence cases and specialises in fatal due care cases. Particular expertise in the areas of; vulnerable witnesses, child witnesses, serious public disorder and importation cases. Has extensive experience of dealing with complex sentencing matters and indeed has experience of giving training in this area.

Advises on appeal against magistrates’ courts decisions concerning practice and procedure and costs.

Crown Court

R v Mohammed and Others – Inter gang rivalry leading to allegations of assault and affray – identification issues. Second matter involved possession of samurai sword in public – extensive legal arguments involved.

R v Pharoah – offences included obtaining benefits by deception [as a landlord]. Social Security Administration Act Regulations an issue in the case.

R v Iqbal – Road rage incident involving serious assault

R v Islam – 70 year old defendant charged with indecent assault upon a young girl in public.

R v Foster – illegal importation of cigarettes to value of £350,000

R v Picardo – illegal importation of cigarettes to value of £850,000

R v Newbury and Newbury – Proceeds of Crime issues in sum of £70,000 case involved supply of drugs within the travelling community

High Court

R v Pearson - Appeared before the Administrative Court in respect of an Appeal by way of case stated concerning the giving of justices’ reasons. Case heard before The Lord Chief Justice.

Personal Interests:

Represented Warwickshire Schools Athletic Association at cross- country and long distance athletics.

Motorsport- raced as a works driver for a major karting manufacturer and represented England in his class in the Inter-Nations Championship in Northern Ireland in 2000.
Active member of the North Yorkshire Lotus Owners Club and regularly ‘tracks’ the car at motor racing circuits.
